This is a g- and R-band image from PTF of a segment of M42, the Great Nebula in Orion, one of the largest and nearest star-forming regions. The wispy filaments are an emission nebula. The more famous Trapezium, at the heart of the nebula, is actually too bright for PTF to look at.
